Bust Illegal Online Gambling Site
Yesterday, Taipei County, Taiwan police officers arrested the owner of a large online gambling site that focused on sports gambling at the motorcycle shop that was a front for his site.
Investigators estimated that the online gambling site took in more than NT$500 million in wagers on the recent World Baseball Classic alone.
According to Police Chief Chen Jin-chen, who was in charge of investigating the online gambling site, the owner of the site earned millions of NT$ on the World Baseball Classic alone. The minimum bet on the game was NT$100, although many gamblers wagered NT$100,000 per bet or more.
“Win or lose, the bookies take 1 percent of each transaction. We estimate they could have probably earned up to NT$10 million from the classic alone.”
The online gambling site owner used a common method to disguise the true purpose of their site: they designed the site so that it appears to be a normal sports site. However, once a gambling logged in, he or she could choose from an array of betting options on sporting events from all over the world.
Gambling on the internet is becoming increasingly popular in Taiwan, where it is illegal.
